Archive for the ‘Vintage Style’ Category

It seems I got behind with my scanning and scheduled posts and so there wasn’t a Vintage Family Friday post this morning. Oops. Instead, I’ll share one of my all time favorite vintage photos I’ve found whilst traipsing through the internets. I wish I could remember where I found this—if you have any information on this photograph, be sure to let me know!

A Favorite Photo

This early 20th century girl doesn’t seem to be affected by the cold. Her pose reminds me of so many I’ve seen on wardrobe remix and other fashion bloggers—she could be taking an outfit shot!

Bored At Work

On Wednesdays, I work at the flower shop’s second store by myself. When it is anytime but Valentine’s or Mother’s Day, this usually means I have a lot of free time to catch up on my reading, listen to podcasts and be bored (alas, there is no internet at the second store). Today while I was bored at work, I was going through a few vintage Disneyland pictures I had saved and started writing notes on them. ‘Cause I’m a nerd.

This next girl is so awesome, I want to dress just like her next time I head to Disneyland. I bet she is wearing a Mickey Mouse Club shirt.

Vintage Disneyland+Fifties fashion=Love. Don’t you just love it when two of your favorite things in life come together? It’s like when The Office makes references to LOST or Harry Potter. It makes my nerdy heart happy.

The Final February Freebie

It’s hard to believe the month of February is nearly gone. South By Southwest will be here before I know it and I will have a house full of French musicians. Oh my goodness, I just realized it is less than four weeks away—I better start cleaning and try to learn some basic French! But I’m rambling. Sadly, we have come to the last pattern giveaway for the month of February, but fear not! I have had such fun with my little giveaways I have already begun to plan another one. The next shall be book related, but you’ll have to be patient and wait for the details later. I’m so mean.

Once again I asked my brother to pick a random number to determine the winner (I think he is just as good as an online random number generator) and the lucky dame is Kristin of Oh My Bettie—congratulations!

The two final patterns I’m giving away are from 1963 and are the same size but unfortunately both are missing the instructions. However, they are fairly simple patterns—nothing you dear readers couldn’t handle!

Simplicity 4845

Simplicity 4861

See—“Simple to Make” the first one proclaims. As always, the giveaway is open to everyone from everywhere and will end Saturday the 26th around midnight (US central time). Leave a comment with your name and tell me what you are looking forward to in March. Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland? The beginning of Spring or Fall? SXSW? Enter away and good luck!

I am so excited because Vday is over and done with, YAY!!! I was so exhausted I went straight to bed after the Olympics last night and forgot to set my alarm. Oops. I was a bit late to work this morning but thankfully it was quiet so we called it quits around 2 and headed home for some well deserved rest.

Guess what else I forgot to do? Announce the winner of the second set of patterns. I asked my brother to pick a number between one and eighteen and the lucky winner is…Selina! Congratulations!

The two patterns I’m giving away this week are:

McCall's 9116

McCall's 7684

Entries are open to everyone (I love you international readers too, you know), simply leave a comment with your name and tell me your favorite Olympic sport to watch. Or if you’re not into the Olympics (what?!?), just say “Hi!” and tell me how your week is going. Seeing as how I am posting this late in the day, I’m keeping the giveaway open until midnight (central US time) Saturday the 20th.

Good luck!

Good morning, dear readers! I have to dash off to work, so you are spared my sleepy ramblings. Here are the two patterns up for grabs this week:

Simplicity 3973

McCall's 9372

{click on the pictures for a larger image and the envelope back}

The giveaway is open to everyone from everywhere and ends Friday the 12th at midnight (US central time). Simply leave a comment with a way to contact you and you will be entered. The winter Olympics begin this week so my question to you is this: are you ready?!?! Are you excited? Or are you someone who doesn’t give a flying flip about the Olympics? I am someone who could care less about professional sports (aside from baseball, I love baseball), but I love the Olympics. Figure skating, speed skating, curling, ski jumps–you name it, I will watch it.

Thanks for all the well wishes, dear readers. I am finally up and about and ready to face V-Day (ugh)! Before I ramble on, allow me to announce the winner of my first ever giveaway…Jessica–The Crafty Librarian! Hurray! Stay tuned Monday for another pattern giveaway. I have too many patterns and they are in need of a good home.

I have been in need of a new hairstyle for quite some time, so in an effort to make myself presentable for V-Day week, I decided to get my hair cut. I knew I wanted my new hairdo to have a retro vibe, but something that would be easy to take care & didn’t require too much primping. What I needed was Emma Peel’s hair:

Seriously, how awesome is Diana Rigg in The Avengers?

She is the epitome of everything cool and stylish from the mid 1960’s and I want her hair.

{February} Saturday the 6th

Okay, so I’m not exactly Diana Rigg and I don’t have her hair. My hair is a bit shorter than I would have liked, but that’s okay–I can grow it out. But the more I look at it, the more I love it. I think it suits me. It reminds me of another 1960’s gal I identify with….what is her name?

I'm Peggy Olson...

Oh yeah, Peggy! (minus the bangs, of course)

Have a great weekend and see you Monday!

Today is Monday, February 1st and I am home in bed, sick with a cold. Or the flu. Not sure which it is yet. There are 13 days left until V-Day and I am sick. This is not a good thing for someone who works at a flower shop. I loathe February 14th more than anyone else I know, but since this is the year Twenty Ten–the Start of Something New–I have decided to make the best of this dreaded month.

Nothing makes me happier than buying/making & giving something away to people I like–and if you’re reading my blog chances are you are someone I like. Every Monday I’ll be giving away two vintage sewing patterns, with a surprise or two added for kicks. I’m trying to think of something else to give away to you non-sewing types, but my brain is in a fog and all I can think about is orange juice and tea. So be on the lookout for something completely different latter this week.

Here are the two patterns up for grabs this week–click the pictures for a larger image & the envelope back:

McCall's 9057

{This pattern is complete with instructions}

McCall's 8367

{This pattern is complete with instructions, but the original owner made some pattern alterations to the sleeve & dress length}

The giveaway is open to everybody from everywhere and ends Friday the 5th, midnight-ish (Austin time–which is central time). Just leave a comment with your name, a way to contact you (email or blog, whichever) and tell me why you loathe February 14th as well what you are looking forward to the most this week. Me? I’m nearly bursting with excitement over the premiere of the final season of LOST tomorrow night. I’m going to get all emotional like I did at the midnight release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when I was finally handed my own book. *sniff* Oh LOST, I do love you so.

Enter away!
