Hello my dears! I have recuperated from the dreaded summer cold and exhaustion from, I don’t know, real life I suppose? Anyways, I am feeling much more myself these days and so I’m back to ye old blog. To kick things off, here are five things I enjoyed during my two week hiatus.

1. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World ~ I loved the graphic novels and everything Edgar Wright has done, so I was very excited for this film. Happily, it lived up to my high expectations. Go see it! It was definitely the most fun I’ve had at a movie this summer.

2. Fruit & Veggie Juice ~ I picked this up when I was sick, looking for something other than my beloved orange juice to quench my never ending thirst. The taste is a perfect blend of citrus fruits and though it says “no sugar added” you could have fooled me as it so sweet. I have now got The Boys addicted to it—they are buying it three at a time and gulping it down like there is no tomorrow. Good stuff.

3. Reading ~ I was in a reading funk for the longest time (a little over a month, but that is ages in Christine reading time), but finally got over it and have read four books in the past week. I just finished the above book by Francisco X. Stork today, which you should go check out from the library. He is fast becoming one of my favorite YA authors.

4. Roasted Vegetables & Pasta ~ Thanks to my CSA box, I’ve had an over abundance of vegetables this summer. I had to come up with a quick and easy to way to use up some eggplant that was getting a bit, um, ripe—which is how I found this pasta recipe from Everyday Food. It’s now one of my quick & easy go-to recipes. I say use whatever vegetables you have handy—squash, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, onions—it’s so simple but so very delicious.

5. Neville ~ My little hedgehog isn’t so little anymore! He’s doubled in size and has mastered running in his wheel. Poor thing is quilling right now (getting his adult quills)—which is kinda like when babies are teething. He’s very huffy, doesn’t want to be held and tries to bite my finger if it gets close to his mouth, but it’s okay. I still like him.

That is all for now—I stayed away from the internet for a while so I have a bit of blog reading to catch up on. If I missed anything super exciting or important, be sure to tell me.

A few of my favorite things from this week, both online and in my life.

1. Theresa’s desktop wallpaper for May is so stripey and lovely, I’m sure you’ll want to save it for yourself.

2. I need this in my kitchen. Now. {via whorange}

Wonderful World of Color

3. Letterheady is full of fascinating old letterheads from companies and noteworthy people. I, of course, love the old Disney letterheads, but I also think the Dick Tracy, Star Trek and Buffalo Bill letterheads are equally awesome.

4. I want to make a skirt from this fabric. The designer is Art School Dropout and you should look at her other work because you will like it. Yep. {via True Up}

5. Watching 16 Candles with my brother, ’cause he has somehow managed to live 23 years without seeing a John Hughes movie. The Breakfast Club is up next.

P.S. See who else is playing along with Five Faves this week here.

1. Flip the Bird 4: A Change of Seasons. Four different scenes and layout interpreted by four of my favorite artists. Love. Love. Love.

2. Drinking a whole bottle of Fess Parker Riesling by myself (not in one sitting! Although I wanted to). Delicious.

3. Eating tex-mex four out of five meals I’ve had in the past 48 hours (breakfast not included). I think I could live on chips and salsa. Yesh.

4. Neglecting and pushing aside chores in favor of reading during a busy week.

5. This 1960’s summer picture of Disneyland from Main Gate Admissions. I love all the people in white and blue with a smattering of red.

The Thief

1. The Thief ~ I just finished re-reading The Thief and it’s just as amazing as I remembered. If you are in need of a quick and engaging read, please, please, please do yourself a favor and pick up the Attolia series from Megan Whalen Turner.

Begone Weeds!

2. Getting Rid of Weeds ~ I have been a terrible homeowner and allowed the weeds get out of control, so I’ve been spending several hours this past week trying to rid the front yard of weeds (Daniel wanted to know why I was digging up “all our pretty little green trees”). I am ashamed to say the above picture is of a pile of weeds from one very small section of the front yard. But, with a lot of hard work (including so much help from my wonderful dad) I have very nearly cleared all the weeds from the front and four bags worth of prickly weeds from the back, hurray!

{April} Thursday the 8th

3. Backyard Picnics ~ With my book in hand, a bottle of Topo Chico by my side and delicious chicken salad (inspired by Sarah’s recipe this week) on my plate, eating outside never tasted so good.

Cornbread

4. Cornbread ~ I know I already devoted a whole post to cornbread, but it was seriously that good. Also, I found out my $5 cast iron skillet was made sometime between 1935 and 1959. Awesome! No wonder it’s so well seasoned.

Happily Ever After

5. LOST ~ Finally! An episode involving my favorite character, Desmond. It made me happy AND it made my brain hurt, which is the best kind of episodes when it comes to LOST. ABC keeps on reminding me there are only five episodes left until the series (series!) finale, so I wouldn’t be surprised if LOST makes my Five Faves again. I’m going to bitterly miss it when it’s gone.

Don’t forget to see who else is joining the Five Fave’s craze!

I’m not usually into blogging memes and whatnot—but I really love Pip’s Five Faves, so I’m going to continue to play along. I like seeing everyone’s favorites pop up in my blog roll, but I also like to go click on five random links and discover new blogs and THEIR five faves. I’m especially glad I clicked on Kickcan & Conkers list or else I may have never learned of the artist Inaluxe:

NICE!

Five Favorites from This Week

1. Fresh California strawberries and blackberries on sale at the grocery store. The strawberries can’t compare to the fresh ones I used to get at the Strawberry Stand in Camarillo, but they are better than average.

2. Our best friend Xave moved in! Now I no longer share a house with my brother (which sounds lame & pathetic) but rather with my two roommates (housemates?), hurray!

3. It’s Buy A Friend A Book Week! I bought this favorite for my friend and this soon-to-be-released book for me (’cause I can).

4. Watching Fantastic Mr. Fox again and again. This is my second favorite Wes Anderson film (after Rushmore, which is one of my top five all-time favorite movies) and one of my favorite films from last year. I didn’t grow up reading Dahl (I blame this on my mom–Hi mom!) so I can’t compare it the book, but I loved every frame of this movie.

5. Getting back on track. I lost my groove for a while but I feel it coming back. I may not have finished Anna Karenina before the end of March (not even halfway through), rid the front yard of weeds in a day or ever post a blog entry every day—but I’m back to where I belong. Life is good.

And you, dear readers? What are your five faves of the week? If you joined the meme be sure to leave a comment. Also, if you are participating in BAFAB Week, tell me what books you are buying! I am always in need of book recommendations.
