I joined a gym last week. Yep, now I’m one of those people. I never really saw myself as someone who would join a gym; I’m the girl who rides her bike or goes for a walk when I want some exercise. But I live in Texas. And as much as I want to be the girl that can take the summer heat and exercise outside—I know I am not that girl. Now I’m one of those people who utters phrases like “I’m off to the gym” and walks to nowhere inside a nondescript air conditioned building, although I do pick a machine near the windows so I can still look at the sky.
ANYways…I went the gym everyday last week. And you know what? It wasn’t half bad. It wasn’t exactly what I would call fun, but walking on a elliptical machine whilst listening to Pottercast and watching the news wasn’t a terrible way to spend an hour of my day. However, I skipped my walk Sunday and Monday and today I did not want to go back. I wanted to go home and take a nap. I wanted to read. I wanted to watch Breaking Bad and work on a silly embroidery project.
But then I looked at my gym bag and was reminded of the bridesmaid dress I’ll wear in a few months. I thought of the wedding pictures that would hang on Rachel’s wall in the years to come and decided that Breaking Bad could wait. So I took a walk to nowhere, listened to my fellow nerds ramble on about Harry Potter, broke a sweat in the air conditioning and came home feeling rejuvenated.
Sometimes the greatest sense of accomplishment comes from doing something you don’t want to do. No matter how big or small your dreaded task may be, you’ll feel much better once you check it off your “To-Do” list. Try it this week! If you don’t feel relieved and fulfilled, I’d be very much surprised.
